Frequently Asked Questions
What is Project Graduation?
Project Graduation is a drug and alcohol-free, all-night celebration held each year for the graduating seniors of Samuel Clemens High School. It is held directly following graduation ceremonies on the night of graduation. Seniors board buses and are transported to an off-campus location where they hang out, play games, eat a late-night dinner & breakfast, participate in a myriad of activities and are eligible to win drawings for many prizes throughout the night. In stark contrast to the "party hopping" mentality of graduation night, Project Graduation gives parents peace of mind knowing their son or daughter is celebrating in a safe, yet fun environment supervised by adults.
The idea for Project Graduation began in 1980 in Maine after a group of several communities came together to prevent recurring tragedies as Oxford Hills had experienced the previous year (1979), when seven alcohol and other drug related teen deaths occurred during the commencement season. Led by DATOH, area schools and communities provided the Class of 1980 at Oxford Hills High School with information about the risks of drinking, drugging and driving. The seniors were offered an alternative to the "traditional" graduation-night drinking event that drew hundreds of people to the local fair grounds. They called this chemical-free party "Project Graduation." The entire process, a huge success, was covered by the news media and was adopted as a major program initiative of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Education Services.
